Tutoring review by Connor in Angell, MI
在这个初始会话,我们在一系列的工作concepts that the student wanted help with. They ranged from basic geometry to algebraic operations. Based on my observations, it is clear that she is naturally gifted at math but sometimes struggles with developing an intuitive understanding of things in school. To remedy this, I emphasized conceptual understanding over simple memorization. I enjoyed the session because she appeared to be genuinely interested in the material. As far as study strategies are concerned, I primarily stressed the benefits of a process-oriented approach to math. For a given sub-concept, once one develops a process and practices it, the particular type of problem has essentially been mastered. I recommended reviewing the notes I left in lieu of extra practice. I will begin quantifying progress over the course of the next few weeks.

We worked through a few more problems in the Geometry book. We also started a very extensive practice that her Chemistry teacher gave them to review for the final. It was written by someone else, though, and sometimes isn't relevant to her class, so we have to wade through the sections and pick and choose relevant problems.

Yesterday we reviewed for the student's unit test, covering solving systems of equations through graphs, substitution, and writing inequalities. She has said that math is not her favorite subject but she has shown a willingness to put in effort to understand the material and she wants to do well. That is great and it makes my job much easier. She has a good grasp of the concepts and just needs to keep working through problems to sharpen basic calculation skills.

I worked with the student on lesson 26, drawing fractions as pictures, which she did very well on. I noticed that she is very meticulous in her work. The second student was working on lesson 25, multiples and quotients as mixed numbers. The problems with multiples seemed to be easy for him. We also reviewed how dividing fractions works. The third student was on lesson 26, the division algorithm, which he already knew how to do, just named as long division. He made the connection between the steps his current book lists and the steps he learned last year and was able to explain how to solve such problems. He did very well on this lesson, I don't think there were any mistakes today.

Tutoring review by Casey in Angell, MI
The student has been getting some new material recently. We had been working on a lot of quadratic functions and talking about how to analyze them and determine where their vertices were and characteristics about them. We are learning about exponential functions now. These are a little bit harder to understand, so I'm pleased to report that she was very quick at understanding what was going on.

Tutoring review by Gwen in Angell, MI
The student was working his end of semester review today. He did a great job. I showed him how to do slope of parallel and perpendicular lines and word problems involving systems of equations. He had a little problem using the substitution method and needs to practice more of these problems. He should do well on the review; if he can go back and do the review one more time, especially the word problems and slope of perpendicular lines, I think he'll be in a good spot.
