Session Summaries by Latin Tutors

拉丁辅导复习阿比盖尔在埃尔克格罗夫,CA
本周,学生和我继续the topics that we covered last week: recognizing and producing the forms of the 4th and 5th declension, the neuter gender, and agreement. We started by verbally reviewing what we had covered last week, and then jumped into some exercises. I started by quizzing him on forms by showing him a 4th or 5th declension word and asking him to identify its case, gender, and number. He performed this task well, with only a couple small stumbles. Then we moved on to working through an exercise from his book that focused on noun-adjective agreement. Here, again, he demonstrated a pretty thorough mastery of the topic and made only one or two mistakes. From there, we moved on to working on a translation passage from his textbook. His skill and confidence in translation has greatly improved--he seemed able to read fairly difficult passages smoothly and accurately. To end our session, we spent some time discussing test-taking and studying strategies for upcoming test.

Latin Tutoring review by Kerry in Elk Grove, CA
The student and I had a terrific first session. He really knows his Latin! I had a hard time keeping him in challenging material. We worked on relative pronouns and reviewed a number of other aspects of Latin grammar and syntax in the sentences I had him translate. At the end of the session, I asked him how he felt about relative pronouns in specific and aspects of his command of Latin in general, and he said he felt "a lot more comfortable" with both. He said he would email me with the date, time, and topics for our next session.

Latin Tutoring review by Amelia in Elk Grove, CA
Today, we focused on reviewing a translation and the grammar sections from the student's textbook since she has a quiz on those this week. We read over the translation. She took some notes on the tougher material on the online whiteboard. We also went over the key components of the grammatical items and translated all the practice sentences in the book since those sentences (or very similar ones) tend to appear on the quizzes. She did well with her identification and translation of ablative absolutes.

Latin Tutoring review by Erin in Elk Grove, CA
Since this was our first lesson, the student and I spent a few minutes assessing his level and concerns. He and I talked through two exercise sentences, making sure to parse and explain each word. I think he's having some issues with differentiating between voice (passive and active) and tense of verbs. We will continue to work on this. He also seems a bit confused by participles, so we'll try to talk through those and practice them a bit more. I think he's doing a great job of processing the language and grammar.

Latin Tutoring review by Jonathan in Elk Grove, CA
Today, the student and I focused first on his declensions. We went over the charts and endings for 1st declension, 2nd declension m/f and n nouns, as well as -er and -ir nouns. We went over m/f 3rd declension, n 3rd declension, and m/f/n i-stem 3rd declension nouns. Then finally we went over 4th and 5th declension nouns. He has a very good grasp on these concepts. He is still working on knowing his charts, and once he has that down we will work harder on being able to identify which nouns belong to which class, but he is certainly on the right track. We spent our remaining time doing paragraph translation, and I am going to source some material for our next lesson that will test more of his grammar, as the one we have been using has maxed out on grammar and is now only a matter of vocabulary. I look forward to meeting with him again on Thursday.

The student seems to understand concepts and pick them up quickly. I started at the beginning, with declining first and second declension nouns and conjugating in the present tense. We are working on building up his Latin foundation.
