Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Katherine in Omaha, NE
In this session, the student and I began to review pre-algebra topics. We practiced translating word problems into algebraic expressions by doing review problems as well as creating a mini poster of common words for each operation. He placed the mini poster in his room to review every night before going to bed. We also practiced the order of operations and substitution, with the use of songs, dances, and practice problems. He had a couple of clarifying questions on how to complete the reading log I left with him last time, so we did an entry during this session and he will have another completed before our next session. He will also go back-to-school shopping soon so we can prepare his binder and backpack organization.

今天我们去了写作和学习风格exercises I gave the student last session. He showed strong leaning toward a visual learning style. We talked about some of his character strengths as a learner, then started in on vocabulary and parts of speech, both of which he needs significant support. I gave him a copy of "A Homemade Education" by Malcolm X and a one page writing exercise on what it means to be a self-directed learner.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Brent in Omaha, NE
I met with the student and his parent. His mother asked for us to narrow down a small list of colleges for the student to apply to and programs for him to take interest in. The student and I identified a particular college as a potential school of interest for him. We also identified 5 programs that he is interested in. We created a plan of action for him so that he organizes his time each day: Apply for at least 3 schools, take the PSAT, identify the requirements for admission to the schools that he applies to, and register for the SAT. He was very receptive to the session. He is beginning to understand the urgency behind applying for schools and taking the PSAT. His parents mentioned that he has spoken with his school counselor regarding college. They added that he seems more focused on studying. He agreed to take an hour 3 times per day to study.

Today we worked through sample problems on sig figs and distilling the rules of sig figs into a cheat sheet. The student had just covered a unit on sig figs in his chemistry class, and this session served as a good review of his knowledge, plus added practice building out cheat sheets so, come final exam time, he need only refer to this work to brush up on rules and examples. He did very well with the problems, tackling even the tougher ones. For next time, I sent him a research paper on baseball bats to review, annotate, and take notes on.

我们讨论了在排序学习方法的新途径r to stay engaged in the material. We talked about spending no more than 30 minutes at a time reading through or writing notes on the same subject in order to ensure that the student is retaining the information that she is reading. She is struggling with picking out important "big picture" information and organizing her thoughts within the context of the chapter. I suggested using Cornell notes which I briefly introduced her to and plan to work further on in future sessions. She was very receptive to my suggestions and I gave her pointers on ways to study for her two tests on Friday. I believe that with a little guidance and support, she will begin to excel despite her heavy workload.

This was a very productive session! The student and I reviewed his goals to start, and confirmed the changes to the SAT. I looked over his practice ACT English section; he got a passable score on it but there is definitely room for improvement. In lieu of jumping straight into sentence diagramming, I had him take notes on a printed lesson and fill out two worksheets, focusing on subject-verb agreement. He definitely struggled with this, and it is one of the most common grammatical concepts on standardized tests, so we will spend more time next week polishing his understanding. I gave him two official homework assignments: a second ACT practice test section (reading comprehension), and some preliminary college research.
