Introduction to Poetry Tutoring FAQ

Taking an introductory poetry course is a great way to acquaint yourself with the particularities and nuances of the genre. A foray spanning from Petrarch's classical sonnets to Frost's understated, yet beautiful New England-based bucolic poetry, gives you the opportunity to explore the rich diversity of poetry. In addition, it also allows you to interpret the meanings of such specifically chosen and arranged words throughout hundreds of years, cultures, and personal perspectives.

Because poetry is so different from prose, you may find that your poetry class challenges you in new ways. Introductory poetry tutoring can help guide you through these challenges to aid in your academic success. Being able to grasp the meaning of a poem through interpretation and analysis is perhaps the most useful skill developed in any poetry class. While the meaning of some poems is simple, other poems, like T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land, remain an enigma to both poetry students and poetry scholars alike.

Today, the student began working on her essay on John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men." The students were asked to consider themes of loneliness and isolation in the novel through the lens of various characters. They were then asked to draw a broader conclusion about what Steinbeck asserts with regards to the idea of human isolation at large. I asked her to write up a list of the characters in the novel she felt she could write about most fluidly. She decided on Curley's wife, Slim and Lennie. She then began generating specific examples of when these characters embodied real loneliness and discussed what their respective coping mechanisms were. After generating ideas and drawing up a rough outline of her three body paragraphs, she began to construct her thesis statement. She will continue with a more detailed outline the next time we meet.
