He wrote a summary for me and then we talk about different aspects of the story, me asking him questions and pushing him to dig deeper. He then wrote another summary based on what we had discovered in the story. We then focused on setting and how that connected to the characterization and development of the plot. I was happy to hear him say one of my favorite phrases, "This is making sense now!" We then skipped ahead to a story he needed to read for class and connected to the themes of the first story. I'm happy to see that he is getting better at making connections and isn't just parroting back terms we've been using. We then did a free writing exercise where he had to write five lines of setting and then five lines of character development and then write five lines that connected the two.

In today's session with Student L, I worked on sounding out words that contain blends such as th and bl. She did pretty well with that. We also practiced reading and spelling sight words. She struggled with many of the sight words. I finished up my session with her by having her read from the primary reader book. During my session with Student M, we worked on cvc words and sounding out vowel sounds in basic words. He practiced reading and writing his sight words and I had him read two primary level books, which he did very well with.

The student and I spent our session reviewing sight words with a specific emphasis on "do," "know," and "then." He is starting to recall that "t" and "h" make the "th-" sound more quickly and is incorporating it into his reading strategy of breaking down a word into it's sounds. He recalled his sight words very quickly during a review of his flashcards and in our "walk on the water" game. Most importantly, during our reading of "Pete the Cat Eats Lunch" he read with confidence and excitement, recalling most sight words with ease! His greatest challenge will be taking his time and resisting the urge to guess when coming to an unknown word. When reading with him I would continue to emphasize that it doesn't matter how fast we read but that we understand the story/the story makes sense. I think he is going to have a great year and I have absolutely loved working with him!
