Tutoring review by Joseph in Cottage Grove, WI
The student and I reviewed material for her exam (which was Friday). Specifically we covered Law of Sines, Law of Cosines, Vectors, as they apply to real life type problems (word problems). I also showed her a few tricks when it comes to these type of problems, for her test preparation (always draw sketches, write down all givens, fill in any "easy" non givens, etc.). She seems to grasp the concepts well, but still makes "little" errors such as calculations, or simple algebraic errors. With a little patience, and checking her work, this should be corrected.

Along with Math homework, the student also had a language arts assignment. She had already finished her math homework before I arrived, so for the first half of the session we went over the language arts assignment. It consisted of a passage in the beginning followed by 3 questions, all related to a flowchart that they had to make in relation to the passage. She was having trouble writing a flowchart efficiently, so we started by going through each paragraph of the passage and summarizing it. Then we talked about translating that exactly onto a flowchart in an effective way. This way she was able to understand how to write a flowchart, as well as have more practice understanding the sequence of events in a story. Towards the end, I taught her how to make an origami fortune teller. With that we wrote the multiplication facts for the 2's table on it, and made the fortune teller into a practice tool for the 2's.

I started the session with the student sharing a math victory with me -- his grade raised 14 points! Yay! We then went into getting him ahead in his new unit: studying triangles. We reviewed six different types of triangles and worked on problems that required him to find missing sides and angles. We added 7 new triangle related flashcards today and reviewed all the ones we had created to keep the knowledge fresh for his cumulative final exam. I left three homework problems in preparation for next week's session, using algebra to find missing triangle sides and angles.

The student had already finished his homework for the previous class and felt he understood the material for the upcoming quiz/test so we moved on with previewing the next topic. We worked on graphing and manipulating quadratic equations. Because this is a pretty novel topic for him, it was a bit challenging in the beginning. However, by the end of the session, he understood the two sections we went over pretty well and felt confident in working through some of the practice problems. For the next session, I will address any questions he had on the two sections we worked on today and move on with the next sections of the unit. We will most likely also do a review if he has any other quizzes and tests coming up.

Tutoring review by Junior in Cottage Grove, WI
Today we did more with solving linear equations in one variable, including the variable on both sides of the equal sign. We progressed to multi-step equation solving. We also studied rational vs. irrational numbers. As a number booster, we considered numerical sequences like 2, 3, 5, 8, ___ where the pattern leads to 12. The concepts of dividing and multiplying monomials were introduced. The student performed above average on each of the practice exercises. Errors consisted of thinking -5 + x as meaning -5x, that y/y = 1, not 0 or y, and that x means x to the 1st power and x^0 = 1. We stressed adding like terms as in "-4x -6x is -10x. I left him with additional practice in these areas as well as presenting the concept of solving linear equations with fractional coefficients as in 3/2 x = 4 by multiplying both sides by the reciprocal of 3/2 which is 2/3.
