CAHSEE English Tutoring FAQ
In order to graduate from high school in the state of California, all students are required to pass the CAHSEE, or California High School Exit Exam. This exam tests a student's acquired skills in two primary areas: Mathematics and English-Language Arts (ELA). While the questions on the CAHSEE Mathematics section consist of a set number of numerical principles and applications, the CAHSEE English section can be much more difficult to predict. Math questions are often formulaic: every exponent problem is solved in the same way, and every linear function can be put in slope-intercept form. Questions concerning reading comprehension and grammar follow no such formulas, as each question relies on a different contextual setting and requires you to apply critical thinking skills in order to arrive at the correct answer.
If you are growing anxious about your impending test date, consider enlisting the help of a private instructor to review the material you will likely face. Varsity Tutors can help you connect with CAHSEE English tutoring throughout the state of California to develop the skills you need to approach this section with confidence. The CAHSEE English section is divided into multiple subsections, each testing different skills. Passages are provided to test your reading comprehension, vocabulary knowledge, ability to identify literary devices, and skill in determining relationships and inferences. These passages can cover a multitude of topics and can vary in genre from nonfiction prose to drama, making it extremely difficult to predict what sort of contextual clues you may need to look for.
Working with a tutor can help you learn to parse the given material to find the details that are most relevant to the author's main argument. CAHSEE English tutoring can allow you to identify different question types and interpret the most common problems with which you will be faced. Mastering the reading comprehension portion of CAHSEE English, however, is only one part of the battle. Following these questions, you must demonstrate your editing and grammatical capabilities. You will be asked to correct the errors found in rough draft passages, to identify and correct the errors in single sentences, and to fill in blanks with correct word choices. For many students, such question types may not have been presented during classroom review. Multiple-choice questions about grammar rarely appear on high school English exams, which instead tend to focus on literary analysis and compositional skill. Working with an instructor can help you learn what types of grammatical questions and conventions appear most frequently on the exam.
The final, and perhaps most intimidating, portion of the CAHSEE English section is the essay. While it can be hard to predict exactly what type of essay you will need to write, you will almost certainly be asked to provide examples and evidence to support your thesis and claims. Whether you are asked to present a persuasive argument, an expository essay, or a literary analysis, it is essential that you are adequately prepared. Practicing your compositional skills and receiving critiques are crucial to developing your writing abilities.

Recent CAHSEE English Tutoring Session Notes
Productive session with the student! We worked on some more math practice for the upcoming state test. Overall, she is doing great!
Performed a final review covering basic data analysis, geometry, and algebra. The student has a much better understanding of the material, but sometimes rushes into problems. I gave her some test taking tips and gave her a final problem set to look over and prepare for. The student takes the exam next Tuesday.
To begin, the student finished the Science portion of the practice exam. I graded the exam. We continued to cover Science and History, completing approximately one hour for each.
周六学生需要他测试我们focusing on as much math knowledge as possible! He is doing very well and should score in the 90 plus percentile. He picks up most processes and can do many things in his head, however, because time does not matter, writing down stuff is a good thing. I try to mention this whenever possible. Overall, I am confident he will do great. This was his best session yet.
The student completed a multiple choice test covering different topics in the content area of Language Arts. Some of these topics were conjunctions, types of genres, phonemic awareness, semantics/syntax, etc. We also went through some of the Language Arts flash cards. Next week, we will discuss Social Studies/Social Sciences.
The student and I worked through several reading comprehension exercises and math problems that focused on approaching multiple choice questions. We talked examining the choices provided to eliminate the obvious incorrect answers, and he demonstrated an ability to apply that strategy on his own.
