This was a productive session. The student and I went over a number of math problems. I started with five practice problems and had him solve them with no input from me. I was timing him, though he didn't know it. He completed five problems in less than five minutes without the pressure of time. We also briefly did science, and I went over reading the question before looking at a chart or passage so that he knows what he is looking for before he starts. We also went over critical reading in science and making sure to read carefully and collect all pertinent information. In terms of test-taking tips, we went over making associations between problems and something in his life that he enjoys so that he can remain focused on the problem and not let his mind wander.

During today's session, we began covering the ACT optional essay in more depth. First I went over with the student what kind of prompt she could expect to see, and we read the grading rubric for essays together to give her an idea what sort of expectations the graders have for the essay. Then we dove right in to a practice essay; I gave her a practice prompt and we spent a few minutes talking together about how to approach planning and outlining an essay in response. I stressed the importance of good organization for the essay, both in terms of pre-writing and in sticking to a general outline to stay on track during the writing phase. We began with her initial response to the prompt and brainstormed ideas for examples and reasons to illustrate and reinforce her point. I gave guidance as to what kind of support was expected in an essay of this type. After the initial planning phase, I set 25 minutes on a stopwatch and allowed her to compose her essay based on the brainstorming we had developed. I then reviewed her essay and offered her advice and constructive critiques on how it might be improved. I noted that she tended to use a lot of passive voice and a somewhat formal style of prose. I suggested that we work together to revise some passages with the goal of increasing an active, naturalistic writing style, which we accomplished by looking at specific phrasing of certain lines and discussing what the key idea she had meant to convey really was. I also suggested we spend some time focusing on developing her writing voice by doing an exercise on finding vivid, concrete, specific imagery to convey more abstract, general concepts.

We reviewed the English and Reading sections of the ACT for an hour each. The student was quickly picking up on the grammatical rules in the English section, and was able to apply them immediately. The Reading section seemed to be a little more difficult. I suggested she work on vocabulary throughout the next week, to benefit both her Reading and English scores.

had her do sets of about 10 and then went through with her to see what she got wrong and what she had trouble with. It's important for her to practice doing the problems by herself without any help. Hopefully by tomorrow when I meet with her again, she'll have done a couple sections of the SAT so we can go through them. We did Math and Writing, although we focused primarily on math. Also, we'll review some more geometry next time.

We focused on improving the student's score in the reading and science sections. In the reading section, she does well with the fiction passages, but on the humanities passages, she has more difficulty. I showed her how to strategize on these passages and find the answers directly in the passage. She is getting more comfortable with the content in the science section. I timed and scored 5 passages in that section. On each passage she averaged 3 to 4 out 5 questions correct. We will work on boosting her score in both of these sections over the next few sessions. Overall it was a good session.

The student and I tailored today's session exclusively to math. His verbal skills and reading level are very impressive, such that we can dedicate more time to math. Today we covered application of the midpoint formula, whether on a coordinate plane or in a 2D rendering of a location like a park; polynomial long division, which he knew but had forgotten; solving for the equation and vertices of a parabola, as a straightforward problem or as a word problem that articulates a scenario involving a parabolic path; and the relationships of internal angles, arcs, and area in polygons. It's not that one particular subset of the material covered in the math sections of the PSAT gives him more trouble than others; rather, he is equally competent with each subject, so the more practice and exposure, the better.
