About Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania, a commonwealth state, is one of the most populous states in the nation. The state was one of the original 13 colonies and was ratified to the constitution in 1787.

Pennsylvania has many great schooling options for students in both high school and college. Some of the best ranked high schools in the state include the Julia R. Masterman Secondary School in Philadelphia, New Hope-Solebury High School in New Hope, and Conestoga High School in Berwyn. For students interested in pursuing a private education, there are schools such as The Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr and The Episcopal Academy in Newtown Square. A good way for students in Pennsylvania to work on their test prep instruction is by calling an educational director at Varsity Tutors to be paired with a private tutor for either in-home or online tutoring sessions.

For today's session, we worked on series and parallel circuits with both resistors and capacitors. The student has the theory down well and just wanted some assistance understanding the harder problems on his recent homework assignment in preparation for his exam.

Tutoring review by Marvin in Pennsylvania
Student 1- Spelling words. By the 3rd attempt, only missed 1/12. Misspelled fruit. Read simple passage with 3 questions. She answered well and progressively better. Student 2 - 5Ws with playing tag. Simple math homework recognizing tens and ones. Student 3- Mental math with fewer fingers, was more precise today. Student 4- Much better today. Remembered last two lessons in order to complete hw from a day ago at a bit quicker more independent, confident, and willing pace. It seems that if I leave her alone and I am occupied, she settles into full work mode. Also wrote 12, 8, and 9 times table. I taught her a trick for 9.

The student and I covered SN1, SN2, E2, and E1 reactions and their mechanisms. We also covered some questions out of his book, and questions I gave him to practice. He was well prepared, but will benefit greatly from further practice and studying for his test tomorrow.

Today the student and I continued to focus on long division with remainders. He did very well on the long division problems. I advised his mom to practice the 12 multiplication facts with the student until next time.

In this session, the student and I continued to work on arrays. When given shapes that were circled, she was asked to identify how the array can be converted into a multiplication problem. We also worked on a little bit of division.

Tutoring review by Rihana in Pennsylvania
The student really is an absolute sweetheart. I had to keep emphasizing that this is going to be a process for us, rather than just a series of lessons that he is expected to memorize, so there is no need to feel bad about spelling a word incorrectly. We tried some visual reminders of sight words, which seems to have some promise. We also tried some chants, which brought out the student's goofy side a little. :) We ended with a little exploration of long and short a's, and now he understands why we call them long and short.
