Tutoring review by Alfred in Midland Park, NJ
Simplifying rational functions and then finding their asymptotes. Very open minded. There were a couple study guide problems left intentional unsolved for the student. I explained, in simpler than textbook terms, what an asymptote really meant and how it relates to the functions.

We had a good lesson today. We completed the science section we started last lesson. I have found that this student works well through problems and his biggest challenge is actually going too quickly and mistaking which is the relevant information. We then moved on to completing more of the reading passages, and actually encountered the same problem. I told him that, since he moves so quickly through passages, he should actually slow down to take the time to really make sure he is answering the question the prompt is proposing. He will particularly test the timing of things this week when he completes a practice test before our next lesson under timed conditions. We finished by doing a little more grammar work in the English section. He will also complete an essay for next lesson.

Tutoring review by Tyler in Midland Park, NJ
The student and I focused this session on probability, looking at common probability concepts such as complement and probability under a uniform distribution. She was able to calculate the probability of various situations under a uniform distribution, including "or" and "not" probability statements. We then discussed looking through distribution through the lens of linear transformation, seeing how adding or multiplying a distribution by a constant impacted the mean and spread of the data. By the end of the lesson she was able to identify the mean and standard deviation of a random variable impacted by a linear function, including understanding what occurs on a visual basis.

Tutoring review by Brandon in Midland Park, NJ
It was great meeting the student today. We began by focusing on Reading and answering general questions using techniques, like covering up the answer. We followed that by digging into some trickier passages, like the ones with older language. After that, we focused on math, geometry, and the basic building blocks of geometry questions that will show up on the SSAT.

Tutoring review by Helaina in Midland Park, NJ
The student had a lot of topics she wanted to go over, but more generally than in depth to clarify. We mainly spent time DNA synthesis/ transcription and translation and energy production (respiration and photosynthesis). For the most part, she seemed to have a general idea of the topics and was just missing a couple points that helped flesh out concepts. For example, why purines pair with pyrimidines and the difference between DNA and RNA. She had a couple worksheets and a review sheet that we used as a guide to hit the topics and questions she was unsure of. I ended up doing a lot of the talking since she had missed those classes, but I worked to tie in the new material to old material so she could contribute connections as well.
