What is your teaching philosophy?
Ensuring that students have solid fundamentals helps them understand future concepts better. If time allows, it is always better to go back and make sure something is understood fully rather than trying to force the way forward without understanding.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I ask the student to see what their goal is, what career path they want, and if they are doing tutoring as a way to enhance their math learning or to catch up. I figure out what skills they may lack so that if needed, we can go back over those to help future learning go more smoothly. I make sure I build a solid foundation of trust and friendship so they feel they can tell me when they are struggling regardless of personal fear.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Being an independent learner depends wholly on their enjoyment of math. I make sure that they understand everything so that stress is never there when learning, which leads to students studying more on their own.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Depending on the student, talk about the potential future and tell personal stories to help them see the success that can be achieved despite fear of themselves.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would attempt an alternative solution to the same problem. I believe that there are multiple ways to solve every problem, and it comes down to finding the system that works best for each individual student and working forward from there.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I would check to see what the student is looking for out of tutoring help and see where the current gaps are in learning, if any, to keep track of while moving forward.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I like to let the student work through a problem and keep track of the steps they're taking, making sure they know why they are making each step. This lets you see how well a student knows the subject.
你如何适应辅导学生的不eds?
Every student needs different guidance. Some need you to walk them through each example until they know how to do the different types. Others prefer to learn the basics and then expand from there. Others like to just memorize the steps. You have to understand the student's learning style and then teach based on that.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I like to make sure they understand what they have been doing in the past, so I prefer to use old quizzes, tests, and homework assignments to check how they do in independent work. Reviewing these materials is important to students above other options. I also create practice problems on the fly to expand on examples.
