I have enjoyed tutoring mathematics since high school and for spending money since undergraduate school. Tutoring is satisfying because helping the students usually has more to do with a stumbling block based in learning style rather than lack of mathematical prerequisites. The "eureka" moment when a student understands the material is the most satisfying feeling I know as a student or instructor during my academic career.

I joined Varsity in the fall of 2018 and steadily achieved proficiency with the online platform. By the time the pandemic began I could honestly say I am as effective online as with my local students I meet in-person at the library. Tutoring online with me is not a social distancing compromise. I have learned to exploit the Varsity Tutors online environment as well as outside resources such as graphing utilities to provide a robust tutoring experience for my students. I will show the student precisely how to configure their browser windows to see the whiteboard and our online textbook or other website. I make extensive use of screenshots and keep in mind the best way to preserve our work for the student to review after the session.

My advice can be general, explaining how to "think mathematically, how algebra differs from geometry, or how differential calculus is just fancy algebra with one conceptual twist. I provide practical tips, like how to manage limited time during a test, and how to prepare differently for open book and closed book assessment. I even have recommendations on a granular level like which kind of paper and writing tools you should be using. Finally, I help students navigate the modern trend of online learning platforms like iXL and Mathlab, and how computer graded assignments are different than human graded work.
