Q & A

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Have an ice-breaker exercise so that I can understand what is important to each student. Understanding what motivates my students enables them to learn effectively.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Provide feedback and give opportunities where students can self-monitor their progress.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Encourage collaboration. Give options and encourage the student to reflect upon what they are learning.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Have more opportunities to model the skill or concept using various analogies and give more opportunity for guided practice.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Use of metacognitive strategies, graphic organizers, summarization techniques, application, and direct explanation techniques.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Relating concepts to real life. Present information to them using what motivates them. Present the material in various formats. Give students options.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Ask the student to summarize what they learned. Ask the student to demonstrate what they learned. Have the student listen to others if in a small group.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Using visual and musical aid helps. Also allow students to talk about what they are learning in a respectful and open learning environment.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Using various assessments.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Understand how students learn effectively. For instance, some students are hands-on learners, meanwhile others may be visual or auditory learners.

Books, analogies, music, and whatever interests the student.
