Originally from the Adirondacks in Northern New York State, I attended Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota and earned my BA in Biology with emphases on Environmental Studies, Ecology, and GIS. After graduation I entered the field of Environmental Education; a career that has taken me from the beaches and salt marshes of Maine to the mountains and meadows of Colorado. During these years of experience working with students K-12, I’ve found tremendous satisfaction and success in teaching everyday science: satisfying curiosities about our natural world and our daily interactions with it. My academic passions lie in the realm of Ecology, a broad topic encompassing elements of several other disciplines, but my tutoring focuses mainly on the Life Sciences. My teaching style is friendly and laid-back. Students and I will not only find the correct answer to a question, but will investigate further to learn WHY the answer is correct; an approach that enables a deeper understanding and retention of the material. Outside of academics, my favorite activities include woodworking, snowboarding, hiking and camping, ping-pong, and scuba diving.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

我和我的学生不仅会努力满足mework and practice test questions, but will investigate WHY answers are correct to provide a deeper understanding of material. I believe an important part of retaining academic information lies in the ability to draw connections to previously-learned topics and across subjects.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a first tutoring session, we will begin to form a more in-depth relationship than the traditional teacher-student. A tutor must be someone a student can personally connect with, generally allowing for greater comfort and enjoyment, and therefore success, of tutoring sessions. Additionally, we will broadly discuss the subject matter and identify the student's strengths and weaknesses within a topic, as well as their goals for our continued sessions.
