I've had a passion for learning and teaching since I started kindergarten. I am now a certified elementary teacher. I am a positive and energetic person with an endless amount of patience. I am a recent graduate of Coastal Carolina University. I have had many unique teaching experiences even though I am just beginning. I have worked with students from 2nd grade through 6th grade. I spent a lot of my student teaching in "gifted and talented" classes as well as students below grade level. I have seen an immense amount of progress from my students in the past. I believe that every student deserves the attention and help that they need to succeed and be confident in and out of the classroom! My teaching style could be described as non-traditional. I understand that every student learns at a different pace and from many different angles. I will do whatever it takes to ensure that a student feels confident, comfortable and challenged.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is that great teachers empathize with students, respect them, and believe that each one has something special that can be built upon.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

During the first session I would spend a lot of time getting to know the student and their hobbies, as well as their study habits, and working on finding their strengths and weaknesses.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Modeling independent behavior is key to helping a student become an independent learner. Showing them how you would approach the task and thinking out loud will help them understand how to be independent.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Having a positive attitude helps students stay motivated. Positive attitudes are contagious!

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Try to figure out a new view on the skill or concept. There are often multiple ways to explain something, and the traditional way does not work for all students.

如何帮助学生在r是谁eading comprehension?

It important to model how I comprehend texts that I have read. Showing the student how I stop and think as I read. Taking thinking breaks during reading will help the student absorb more of the content.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Relating the subject to something they are interested in, such as a hobby or a sport. For example, if the student is struggling in reading, I would find them a book about something they are interested in, as long as the book is on their reading level.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

If a student can explain out loud their thinking and how they answered the problem, it usually indicates a great amount of comprehension.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I try to incorporate a variety of teaching tools throughout a session. For example, for math I would try to find examples to help visual, auditory and kinesthetic learners.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I have noticed that doing activities that the student is comfortable with at first creates confident students. So when the work starts to get harder they still remain confident.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

A positive attitude and using encouraging words goes a long way when trying to boost a student's confidence.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate a student's needs by assessing their understanding of the subject by having them explain the content to me.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Beginning the tutoring session with a pre-assessment will help me determine the student's needs.
