I graduated from McGill University with a B.Sc. in Chemistry and a minor in Biotechnology. The subjects I tutor are math, chemistry, biology, and writing. My favorite subjects to tutor are the sciences; there is so much to discover and there is no limit to what you can learn. I can say that some great teachers and professors have shaped my interest in science and would love to help other students see this joy in learning. I know science and math can be really tough, and many times I have wanted to give up, but I pushed through, and I want to give other students the encouragement and ability to push through as well. My teaching philosophy is focused on the quality of learning, and to practice, practice, practice! My favorite element is silicon, and in my free time I like to dance ballet, practice yoga, play piano, read, and cook.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

Practice makes perfect, so memorization and problems are your key to success!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Go over what the student has been learning recently, and review the basics if that will help set the foundation.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Learn to note what is important in the material, and try to think about how you would form an answer to a potential test question.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Take things one step at a time! Achieving little goals can boost one's confidence more than trying to tackle all the material at once.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Slow down a bit, and try to look at it in a different perspective. Often, once you go back to the original concept, it will be obvious!

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Suggest taking mental or actual notes alongside the reading, or after a few paragraphs. Think, "What is the point of this section, and why is it important?"

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Give them a fun trivia segment where they have to answer a few easy/interesting questions pertaining to the topic, or bring in an article demonstrating a real-life application of they subject at hand.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Do a mini quiz at the end of the session.
