I am currently a graduate student at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA, working towards my Masters of Science. I obtained my Baccalaureate of Science from Xavier University with a major in Biology and a minor in Chemistry, English, and Spanish. I have tutored students for almost ten years, and I thoroughly enjoy assisting students in reaching their full potential. I have tutored students at the graduate school level, college level, high school level and grade school level as well. I believe tutors should provide more than mere expertise in a particular subject. Tutors should also provide confidence and encouragement to their students as well. I also believe in teaching both learning and content. By teaching both, students will feel both proficient and confident while working on a problem set or subject by themselves. In addition to teaching the critical and high yield information to a student, I also enjoy making the material interesting and relevant for that particular student. Knowing the interests of each individual student I tutor allows me to shape my lessons accordingly, and keep them both enthusiastic and engaged in the material we are focusing on. I was once a high school student and college student, and I understand the struggles and difficulties students encounter while trying to learn. I take pride in helping students overcome those problems and difficulties.

When I am not in school or tutoring, I also conduct stem cell research at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. We aim at developing optimal prenatal treatment strategies for a wide variety of genetic and acquired disorders. I am also a personal trainer that loves physical fitness. I would love the opportunity to tutor anyone that wants to become the best student they can be!

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

I utilize two primary philosophies as a teacher: to get students to think about science as a process, and to individualize their learning experiences -- the former of which I learned as a student myself, and the latter of which became evident as an effective teaching strategy.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In the first session, it is important that I learn about the student themselves. How do they learn? What are they good at? What gives them trouble? Are you visual or auditory? Once I know these things, I can tailor my tutoring lessons for that particular student.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

To become a successful independent thinker, you have to know yourself. One cannot be in denial about their strengths and weaknesses. You must also be honest with yourself about what skills you both possess and lack. Once you have that down, it is important that the student be: motivated, resilient, and an excellent time manager. These traits will ensure your success as an independent learner.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Research has shown that good everyday teaching practices can do more to counter student apathy than special efforts to attack motivation directly. Therefore, I aim to keep students motivated through my teaching style.
