I'm a big Boston Celtics fan and I speak three languages. I can get you the test results you need to succeed because I went through the exams myself and performed well. The first time I took the SAT I actually wasn't satisfied with my score, so I spent 2 months working hard to get my score to where I wanted it to be. The second time I took the exam I saw a 200-point increase. Previously, I have had experience teaching the SSAT and the SAT. The student I tutored in SSAT successfully passed the exam is now attending a private high school abroad. With VarsityTutor's online learning platform, I will be able to transfer knowledge in a visual, easy-to-understand manner. I look forward to being your tutor and helping you reach your academic goals. :)

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

Patience. Encouragement. Attitude. Engagement.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get a general assessment of the student's level. Understand how the student wants to focus his/her time.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Get the student interested in the material so that he/she willingly takes the effort to go the extra mile at home, whether that's reviewing material already covered in class or learning/solidifying concepts on their own.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Encourage the student throughout the learning process. Be patient with the student. Let the student know that the subject is not an easy subject to comprehend.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Find a different approach to explaining the concept. Find a way to relate the skill/concept to the student in a meaningful way.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Read an article together with the student. Stop after every paragraph/section and have the student summarize what happened in their own words.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Ask as many questions as possible. Really try to get a sense of where the student is at by asking meaningful, relevant questions.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Find a real world application of the subject that piques the interest of the student (a YouTube video perhaps).

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Find a way to quiz the student during the session.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Build up to harder questions. Start off with easy knowledge (the foundation) and build up to more difficult knowledge.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

A direct question to the student can often do the trick: "What do you feel you need to work on?"

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Spend more time/focus/energy on the areas the student has identified as their weak points.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

A combination of my own materials (books from the Chinese school I used to go to for example) and the materials the student has brought with him/her to the session.
