ACT Writing Tutoring review by Julie in Evanston, IL
我们reviewed the outline of an essay she wrote previously. We also outlined and wrote an SAT essay together. Here are the strategies we discussed: Outlining: -Generally, decide on a thesis before coming up with examples. -The best theses tend to be nuanced, and to not agree with either side of the argument that the prompt is positing. For example, in this case, the prompt was: "Are average people better role models than famous people?" The prompt invites the test-taker to take two positions -- "average people are better role models," or "famous people are better role models" -- but the student developed a more sophisticated thesis: "both average/famous people can be good/bad role models." -After deciding on a thesis, brainstorm three examples that will help you make a developed argument. In this way, if you find that you dislike an example, you can discard it so that you still have two on which to fall back. -While it's nice to have diverse examples (e.g., personal, literary, and historical examples), if the prompt doesn't allow you do this, don't force diversity. -It's okay if your examples aren't entirely truthful - just make sure they can be molded to fit your argument without overly suspending disbelief. Writing the introduction: -Begin with a motive: often, the claim that you are trying to disprove with your thesis. -Explain why some might believe this claim to be true (this part of the introduction might seem more naturalistic to the structure of your essay if it begins the introductory paragraph, rather than following the motive.) -Explain why this belief isn't sound. - Which leads to your thesis Writing the body paragraphs: -Write the paragraph that comes easiest to you first, for the purposes of time/getting into the mood to write. Writing the conclusion: -Reiterate your examples. Moreover, explain how they connect to each other (i.e., explain how they fit into the overall structure of the essay.) This is very important, since the conclusion is the best place to do this! -End with a general statement: either a restatement of your thesis or, even better, a statement that is stronger than your thesis. General writing tips: -Avoid writing overly long sentences. Try to include short/long sentences throughout your essay. -If struggling with word choice, don't let that stop your flow of ideas. Circle the word and come back to it later. I left her with some helpful links for the grammar section.

ACT Writing Tutoring review by Jeffrey in Evanston, IL
我们went through the Critical Reading section from the SAT this time. I have seen really strong, impressive growth from the student on this section through our work. She really knocked the passages sections out of the park. She scored in the mid 600s on this section and I really think with some improved concentration on the fill in the blank section, she could easily get into the high 600s on Critical Reading.

我们对词汇习得和继续工作sentence completion questions. I suggested some strategies for learning vocabulary. We continued to identify words to add to his list. We practiced some general math strategies: - On long word problems, write down information as it's presented (write equations, make variables, draw graphs, etc.). This way you don't get lost in the question repeatedly. - Always, always, always label figures. Label everything you know (even if you think it might be irrelevant to the answer). - On questions where you're not sure what to do (especially if there are more than two variables), start by doing what you do know how to do. Try to re-write the information in a different way (for example, cross-multiplying). Sometimes this makes the answer clear.

ACT Writing Tutoring review by Catherine in Evanston, IL
The student and I had a positive, productive review section in preparation for her SAT. We took a comprehensive look at the strategies, structure, and content that we've covered together over the past several weeks. In math, I recommend that she really focus her energy on the first half of the multiple choice sections, and on the easier multiple choice/easier grid in on the combined section. I was extremely encouraged by our mapping session today. She answered the first six questions of the section correctly, because she took her time and worked through systematically. She is doing a better and better job associating relevant information. In writing, when she is in doubt, she can simplify the sentences by cutting out auxiliary words and by restructuring the grammar into her own sentence. She can also think about the common types of errors for each part of speech (all of which we listed today). In critical reading, my biggest tip for her is to think about the type, purpose, and main idea of each passage, then answer the questions in her own words before looking at the answers. She has made a lot of progress, and it has been a pleasure to work on the SAT together. I recommend that she review her notes from today's session, as well as the prep book for essential math information. I also recommend that she work through at least one of each type of section from a practice test. Self-correcting these sections should really help her confidence and critical thinking on the exam. She should feel free to be in touch by phone or email with any last minute questions, and I will look forward to meeting for an ACT prep session in early June.

ACT Writing Tutoring review by Parag in Evanston, IL
我们went over the student's past homework, which had one 40-question problem set on general grammatical questions and the second one focusing on apostrophe errors. While she didn't do as well as she had hoped on the homework, she did extraordinarily well in picking up the concepts after we went over what she had done wrong. For homework, I will be assigning her two other problem sets focusing on different types of grammatical errors so she can improve her repertoire for the test.
