The importance of education cannot be underestimated, as well as the need for a variety of learning styles and teaching techniques. I hope to accommodate this diversity through creative methods, enthusiasm, and confidence in every students ability. Everyone can succeed, as long as they put in the effort needed and information is presented in an accessible way. This want to tap into every students academic potential is what began my passion for teaching.

I am currently a junior at Villanova University studying biochemistry as well as minoring in education and Spanish. I transferred into the biochemistry program from chemical engineering because I wanted a career that centered more on human interaction and had a direct positive impact. Other activities I do at Villanova are mostly music based; I play the viola in the orchestra and sing for the church choir. Im also a member of the Outdoors Club and enjoy hiking when I have the opportunity. As a middle child of a large family, Im very comfortable around both students my age and those significantly younger. Most of my tutoring experience has been with students 1st to 8th grade.

Other than tutoring content areas, I also pride myself on being organized and developing study skills to use my time efficiently. There are increasingly new methods to assist students in these skills if they are given guidance and motivation. If you have any questions about tutoring, or academia in general, please feel free to contact me!

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

With creativity, patience, respect, and open-mindedness, both student and teacher can grow.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I think to effectively work with a student you need to establish a relationship, so I would spend the first half of the session getting to know their personality and asking a few questions about their study habits. I would also try to gauge what difficulties they are having in the subject and how their normal classroom runs. I would also tell the student a little about myself before spending the second half diving into the subject content.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Instilling confidence in the student to discover an answer on their own is an important aspect of being an independent learner.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

To be honest, I have mixed feelings on the motivation process. Depending on the student, some need physical rewards such as stickers or candy as motivation. But the goal is help students realize the satisfaction of reaching academic success and experiencing an intrinsic motivation.
