Tutoring review by Anna in Bedford, VA
The student worked on homework covering function operations and composite functions. We added, subtracted and multiplied functions, monomials and binomials. We also performed composition of two functions, one of the other and then evaluating the composite function at a certain value of x. After several examples, he was able to set up his the problem on his own, and solve it from his own setup. He finished the homework and worked on several more problems from the same set of exercises that were not assigned.

The student has just started algebraic expressions in his math class, which I was excited about as algebra has always been my favorite part of math. He has a test on Friday on simplifying expressions by combining like terms, and on the properties/axioms of algebra. We worked on a sheet that his teacher had given him to help study for the test, which was a series of expanded expressions for him to simplify. The student did fairly well with most of it. He did initially seem a bit confused by the distributive property, occasionally only distributing the multiplier to the first term within the parentheses, but after pointing it out and refreshing on the order of operations he had less problems. After the worksheet was finished, we made some flashcards for the properties of algebra, and talked about how he applied them when he had been working in the sheet--particularly the distributive and associative properties.

We are continuing to go over word problems. I like reciting the problems for her because it forces her to focus. She's much quicker at picking up on keywords and equally as quick at realizing what she may have missed. All I have to do is let her know her answer isn't right and she knows within seconds where she went wrong.

The student and I went over loan payment calculations. I made sure to demonstrate that the information given was not the same as that given for savings plans. We solved several problems paying special attention to breaking up the problems so that she could use her calculator to solve the equations. Small calculator issues seem to be the biggest problem, so making sure the equation is broken into parts and organized for each question will be very important towards success on the final exam.

The student and I reviewed the results section of an article. We explored how to determine when data are statistically significant and we also examined how to determine if a finding is clinically significant. At the end of the session, the student appeared to understand how to discern this.

I helped the student prepare for her upcoming test by going through the practice test provided in her textbook with her. She understood many of the concepts well already, and I helped her learn the remaining things she needed to know. She seemed more confident about her upcoming test at the end of the session!
