What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I will begin to get to know the student and assess their knowledge of the content. I will review basics first, and slowly work towards more recent learning to determine where their needs lie.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I will help the student to find out how they learn best, and I'll encourage them to find and use the study skills that work for them.
What is your teaching philosophy?
I know that Latin is not easy. But I also know that with study and perseverance, it can be very rewarding to all students who dedicate themselves to it. I get so excited when students make connections in vocabulary, grammar, or literature. In English, we get so many words from Latin; the grammar is just plain beautiful in its systematic consistency, and making connections to ancient Romans who read the same words is invaluable. I love Latin.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Initially, I find out what the student knows and what they don't know. Then, building on what they know, I begin to fill in their gaps of knowledge. And I am friendly.
