Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe in "teaching to life" - in other words, to try and help students see the practical value in the subjects they study, in addition to maximizing their GPAs.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In the first session, I would exchange basic introductions to break the ice, and then I would ask specific questions about their goals overall, as well as for that particular session. Prioritizing points of learning is important to successful outcomes.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I endeavor to help students become independent learners by showing them effective ways to research academic topics. I also try to help them see the adventure that education can become, and how exploring perspectives can lead to future benefits.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

我将尽力帮助p a student stay motivated by exploring ways to connect a topic to one or more of their personal interests or hobbies.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student has difficulty, I would first reassure them not to be too hard on themselves as long as they are giving the subject their most excellent attempt. No one is good at everything. I would also come up with a list of YouTube videos they could watch on their own time and encourage them and their parents to speak to their teacher about additional remedial options within their educational establishment.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

The way I would handle reading comprehension is encouraging them to read each sentence and discuss what each one means - reminding them of the previous sentence/paragraphs as we go. Although this can feel boring and tedious to some, it is an effective process they can always call upon, and after a bit of practice, it usually becomes easier for most students.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Relatability is key to connecting a student's motivation to the subject matter. Finding practical applications for a topic helps make it more relevant and interesting.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would help get a student engaged in a subject they struggle with by finding ways to relate it to their own life.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

我将尽力帮助p ensure a student understands the material by giving them a low-pressure Q & A session and hypothetical scenarios for them to use what was studied.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I try to build a student's confidence up by praising even small milestones. If the subject matter shows little improvement, I make sure to give them kudos for their efforts - while keeping it honest about what areas they need to work on.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Evaluating a student's needs is derived partially from how they (or their parents) perceive the situation, partially from their grades/course work, and partially from me watching their grasp of the material during the first session.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt my tutoring to student needs by trying to adjust my interaction according to their level of comprehension and their communication style.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I typically bring my phone and/or laptop so that we can access online resources. If more resources are needed, I would encourage the student to purchase specific items that may help us as we grow forward in any given topic.
