Reflecting on my educational experiences, I have learned to appreciate the impact that teachers make on the lives of young student. I also realise that the skills and knowledge acquired in the classroom, will be used by students throughout life. Therefore, as a tutor, I hope to be a role model that cultivates in young people, the knowledge and ability to look at the world critically, and the belief in ones capacity to make positive contributions to society.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

My mission as a tutor is to make every student feel comfortable and confident enough in themselves to have the ability to focus on learning.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know the student and ask what their weaknesses are. This will give me an idea on approaches I should use to help them improve their weaknesses.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

For a student to become an independent learner, I would have to help them to find the best possible ways for them to understand something. This can be done by helping them relate things to everyday life.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Making things fun by providing good feedback, making attainable goals, and having positive reinforcement. Encourage the student in every little effort they give.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would repeat myself. I would go over it again and ask students what they understand about the concept and try to explain it in a different way.
