What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is making sure students learn the fundamental content from the subjects I teach. As a Resource Room teacher, my objectives are to develop critical thinking skills, promote lifelong learning, and to help students develop problem-solving strategies.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
我would have students read a sample of writing for me, so I can gauge their fluency.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
我would have the student "show me how you...", instead of doing it for them, or just giving them the answer.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
我would provide constant feedback to the student and make sure I am increasing their confidence. I would also provide a safe and comfortable learning environment that gives them ample opportunities to succeed and feel confident.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
我would present the content in a variety of ways so that I am able to best accommodate the student who has a different learning style than the teaching style I may have originally planned on using.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
我would have the students slow down if they are rushing, and tell them to take their time and that it is not a race. I would also tell the student to not worry about getting the word right on the first try, but just to try their best and sound it out. I would encourage the student to reread what they just read, and tell them to tell me what was going on in the story.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I try to use content that is engaging for the student and give them the choice of what they would like to do whenever possible.
你将如何帮助学生获得兴奋/ w订婚吗ith a subject that they are struggling in?
我would use self-competition if the student was competitive with themselves. I would sometimes set a timer to tell the student they have X amount of time to finish that math problem, or to see how many questions they can find the answer to by looking back in the story. I would try to make it a game or a challenge.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
我would check for understanding after giving instructions. Also, I would use formative and summative assessments throughout the lesson. During the lesson, I would ask comprehension questions to make sure I knew the student understood what we were reading. Also, I would assess students at the end of the story, to see if they retained the information.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
我would tell the students things like "Let's find the topic sentence, you were so good at finding it last lesson when we read about rocks...". I would also say things like "You are becoming such a great reader!" Finally, I would end the lesson by saying "Great job today, I want to see you work like this every day!"
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
我would use assessments either verbal or daily work to see which questions the students answered wrong. From there, I would re teach all the concepts that need to be retaught, and provide ample practice opportunities to help the student get better at what they were struggling with.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
我would make modifications and accommodations based on the student's needs. I could chunk the reading or assignments into certain parts and only focus on one task at a time so the student is not overwhelmed.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
我would use highlighters, bookmarks (to help cover some words while students are sounding out words), pencils, erasers, whiteboards, markers, and number lines for math.
