IB Language B HL Tutoring FAQ
As a global educational endeavor, the International Baccalaureate Organization has placed an emphasis on learning a foreign language by making it a key component of its diploma program. While every student in an IB curriculum must take a foreign language course, students wishing to undertake the most rigorous instruction offered in a particular language may elect to take Higher Level IB Language B courses. Students in these courses are exposed to many more hours of instruction than those in Standard Level IB language classes, and as a result are expected to perform at a more advanced level on their exam papers. IB Language B HL courses ask students to become nearly fluent in the target language by developing a well-rounded set of linguistic skills. Students are tested on reading, speaking, and writing in a foreign language, and are asked to translate works from the target language into their native tongues. The multifaceted nature of the course will test their understanding of cultures that speak the target language, as well as require that students read two works of literature in the target language and conduct sophisticated analyses of the works' meanings. Students who succeed in this intense course of study will have developed superb language skills upon which they can rely in future academic and professional endeavors. As such, the course is a perfect springboard for those students who wish to study a language at the college level or even attend college in a country speaking their language of choice.
While it can be challenging to gain all of the skills and knowledge required to excel in an IB Language B HL class, the course can be unnecessarily difficult if approached in a way that doesn't make the best use of a student's time and energy. Private tutoring can help students approach their advanced language studies in a methodical and efficient manner. Varsity Tutors recognizes that each student approaches language-learning with a unique set of strengths, weaknesses, and concerns, so we help connect students with a tutor who has the skills to best help them. The tutor will work with the student to customize the lesson plan and tailor it to their particular concerns and educational background, allowing the review to be as effective as possible for their specific academic situation. Students collaborate with their tutor in designing a study plan that addresses weak skills, patches any gaps in knowledge, and avoids wasting time going over material that's already understood.
Each one-on-one IB Language B HL tutoring session is spent helping students improve their knowledge in the areas that can make the most difference on one's performance in class and exam papers. If a student needs to focus on making sense of literary works in their target language, the tutor can answer questions and help sort through literal and figurative meanings in the text. If a student wants to focus on bolstering his or her speaking skills, the tutor can act as an excellent conversation partner and provide feedback on verbal articulation. There is no general approach to learning a language, and the multifaceted nature of the IB Language B exam requires students to master many different aspects of their target language in order to succeed. Working with a personal tutor can allow students to develop their skills in a private setting that is custom-tailored to be most efficient. Recent IB Language B HL Tutoring Session Notes
今天,我们回顾了核心词汇。我嘎ve the student a little practice today by asking him to translate some English phrases and sentences into Chinese. I'm glad that he did a great job. Last class, he even asked if he can participate in practice test level 2. He seems to become more and more confident toward test-taking. I enjoyed working with him and glad to see his progress.
Today we learned how to represent and add numbers on an abacus as a way of learning about Chinese culture. The student quickly learned how to represent numbers, and by the end of the session she could add numbers (without carrying) with a few reminders from me. She independently looked up "abacus" in the dictionary and we practiced making simple sentences in Chinese about the abacus.
The student and I went over a set of flashcards for the first hour. She did very well on these and recognized most of the cards without needing assistance. We spent a half hour going over the cards that she struggled with (most of these involved silverware and objects.) Then we reviewed some of the old children's stories like "Picnic," "Delicious," and "Disappear," and practiced conversing about dates, ages, times, and families.
Today we reviewed phrases the student learned from last month, e.g.. the numbers, the time and the shapes. After we played the game of "Yi, er, san, reng", we learned new shapes by drawing and coloring. The new shapes are "oval, octagon, diamond, heart, and star". The student seemed quite used to learning and drawing at the same time. We followed this tradition all along during our classes.
I decided to review the old lessons with the student. I was a little surprised because he forgot some of the things he has previously learned. However, he caught on to everything fast and it did not take him much time to learn everything again. One thing that really amazes me about the student is his ability to memorize and learn. He obviously has a good memory and is very smart.
Today's session was about learning to write characters that are related to family, as Mother's Day was yesterday. So students learned to write "love," "mother" and "father" in Chinese and in the end they were asked to write a short sentence saying "I love mother and father" in Chinese characters. We also reviewed some characters we learned last week.
