I've been dancing since I was three years old. I started teaching dance when I was 14 years old. I joined my high school drill team when I was 15 years old. All of this meant that by the time I started high school I was at dance practice before school and after school every day of the week. My Saturdays were often filled with extra rehearsals or competitions. This left little time for schoolwork. However, I knew the college I wanted to attend and the future life I pictured for myself. That gave me the motivation I needed to get my work done quickly and effectively. I learned how to make the most of the time I had available and how to prioritize.
I went to college at Brigham Young University, a school I absolutely loved. While there I struggled to decide what I wanted to major in. I started in public relations because it's my favorite part of business but found that I didn't actually enjoy it as much as I'd hoped. Next, I went into history because I absolutely love history and how understanding the past can help us understand our present. However, I decided not to stick with it because I wasn't as interested in the jobs that a history major offered to me. In the end I majored in English because I love that reading lets you learn about all kinds of different things at once. It can teach you culture, empathy, religion, psychology, philosophy, and much more.
The most important thing I've learned through my time in school was that trying to do a lazy job on my assignments and still get good grades was a waste of my time. Learning should be a great experience! I want to help students recognize how much better schooling is when you really put your all into it and have a good attitude about it. Plus, actually doing all the reading and homework really does make the classwork easier!
