I am a recent graduate of the University of Minnesota with a double major in Philosophy and Political Science. I have worked as a tutor since sophomore year of high school, and continued tutoring throughout my undergraduate education. I have experience tutoring a wide variety of subjects, but my specialty is ACT and SAT test prep. I have worked with a lot of different students, and I take pride in the fact that they have all seen significant improvements in their scores!

I find little more rewarding than seeing something a student has been struggling with finally "click." It is immensely validating for me as a tutor, as well as a triumph for the student. Those moments are the most important of any tutoring session. They help motivate students and give them confidence to tackle the next subject, and promote a deeper understanding of the subject matter that often doesn't occur in class. In a lot of ways, tutoring is a healthy challenge for both the student and the tutor -- my challenge is to figure out how a student learns and help them reach those "aha" moments.

Math is challenging for a lot of students. Since math skills build on themselves year after year, small learning gaps from past years can snowball and leave students confused. My challenge is often to figure out where exactly those learning gaps are fill them in. For higher-level math, it can sometimes be a matter of explaining things different ways until one of them sticks. The abstractness and hierarchical nature of math is a challenge for tutor and student alike, but it is also one of the most satisfying to work on.

I obtained a 36 on the ACT Science section, and helped many students do the same. The key to the science section is that it's not really about science knowledge -- it's about the ability to quickly absorb and synthesize information and recognize patterns. All the background a student needs is to understand the principles of the scientific method. I help students to recognize the different types of questions and passages on the Science ACT, and to understand what the test is looking for. A common exercise I have students do is to identify what information the question wants them to find, and where they can find it in the passage. It seems simple, but I have found it very effective!

我有完美的英语和阅读成绩,I know the grammar rules the ACT tests offhand. The key to the English test is knowing the rules. Most students, as native English speakers, know grammar rules intuitively. This is great for writing, but not as helpful on the ACT, where questions are often written purposely to trip up students' intuitions. I make sure students know the rules, and work to undo their instinct to rely on intuition rather than using the grammar rules they learned .For the reading exam, the most important things for most students are speed and "knowing the test." Students who know what information to look for in passages and what types of questions they might be asked perform better and more quickly.

I am flexible on locations and scheduling! I respond to emails quickly, and my phone is always on. Please feel free to reach out and we can discuss your student's needs and schedule a first session!
