What is your teaching philosophy?

I have a true passion for what I do, and the most rewarding moment about teaching is watching my students grow as young men and young ladies and learning about the world that surrounds them academically and socially.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In the first session, I would ask my students questions about what they're studying, ask to see or show me an example of their classwork, homework or notes and the steps that are performed in class to complete the lesson at hand so I can make sure that when I am working with them, the procedures I use are similar to what they are used to. I will make it fit for them so they can understand.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student become an independent learner by teaching them strategies they can using to complete their work for whatever lesson that may be studying at the time. Problem solving strategies are key in math, and when a student is able to use theses strategies independently, it will make understanding math skills, no matter what topic it may be, a lot easier.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I will help a student stay motivated by reminding them that everyone is human and we all make mistakes. I would ensure them that practice is key to mastery of skills. In addition, I will celebrate them when they do master certain skills or have that "ah ha" moment while learning.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student is having trouble learning a skill or concept, then I will try another strategy that would be easier for them to understand, so they can not only solve the problem but be able to complete their work independently in the future.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The strategy I found to be most successful when I work with a students the ability to break down the problem in parts so the student can have a better understanding of what they are solving for.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

The strategy that I would use to get a student excited about a subject they are struggling with is to relate the subject to real-world activities that they can relate to or are involved in (ex: sports, shopping, money, etc.).

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

To make sure the student understands the material, I would conduct a "reteach" session with several questions that relate to the material that the student is studying. This reteach lesson would include numerical problems and problems where the students explain their understanding and vocabulary. The forms this would come in could be using a supplemental online program, flashcards or teacher-made problems.
