I am currently an undergraduate student pursuing an Aerospace Engineering degree from the University of Florida. I originally started tutoring through my former high school’s Mu Alpha Theta chapter, where I volunteered as a mathematics tutor for four years. Although I tutor a wide variety of subjects, including mathematics (from pre-algebra to multivariable calculus) and physics (mechanics and electricity and magnetism), I am most passionate about calculus. In my experience, the concepts of calculus can be understood by most students when they are presented in an intuitive way: I try to present concepts in an intuitive and basic way. In my spare time, I work on my Universities Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) design team. I have found mathematics to be an invaluable asset in my design and analysis work, and I would like to share my knowledge with the world.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

My philosophy of teaching can be best described as diplomatically not giving out the answer. In other words, I let the tutee attempt the material, and I step in to help with any gaps in knowledge.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would attempt to understand what particular aspects of a subject the student is struggling with. I would then proceed to planning out how best to address these shortcomings in future sessions, if not possible in the first session.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

In most of the subjects I tutor, I feel the subject has a beauty that goes unappreciated by most students. When possible, I like to show students why the material is relevant, or even cool. In this way, I encourage students to become independent learners.
