What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe every student can learn. All it takes is someone to turn on the light bulb!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session, I like to get a sense of the student's experience and understanding of the topic or subject, and then find out where they are struggling. I also work to understand how the student learns best. Then I take the student to the beginning of the concept and help them learn and understand.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I help them identify the learning strategies that work best for them, and then devise a plan for them to use those strategies independently.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

It's important to make the subject interesting. Good teachers are excited about what they are teaching and are able to break things down into bite-size pieces that make sense. It's also important to continue to encourage students and celebrate their successes.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I like to break down concepts into bite-size pieces that make sense. We will work through a concept in multiple ways until we find one that works for the student.
