What is your teaching philosophy?
Fostering a positive learning environment to all students and maximizing individual student performance.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Introduce myself, and find out from the student and parents what their goal is for the tutoring sessions.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Fostering collaboration in lesson planning, providing oral/written feedback on homework and classwork if applicable. By increasing their motivation and creativity in learning.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
By building their confidence and providing different opportunities to complete different tasks.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Using visual demonstrations to supplement audio and repetition of concept for better understanding.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Together with the student, identify where the difficulty occurs, and then encourage the student to restate difficult sentences in his/her own words. Teach the student about how to draw conclusions on the text they've read.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Finding a way to connect with the student. Making the learning relevant and valuable while connecting with the student using his/her interests and fascination.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Through connecting what is being taught in real life, presenting information in different formats to see which one will provide a better learning experience for the student.

Using specific everyday examples, choosing very relevant materials, and providing verbal/oral feedback on work completed by student.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Through students' self-reports and inventories of prior courses or experiences, as well as concept tests.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Pre-teaching difficult vocabulary and concepts; providing visuals; using flashcards if possible; providing written and oral directions; and giving explanations in small distinct steps.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Worksheets, guides, study outline, flashcards, charts, graphs, if needed, and a board.
