Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

I like to teach using visual aids and technology. Giving immediate feedback is important to me to help my learners succeed.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can explain to a student how important it is to "learn how to learn" and become highly organized. I emphasize the importance of setting goals and completing tasks to see progress. I encourage students to be proactive in his or her learning.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would give them stickers or badges each time the student made progress. I would award the student in a good way that makes him/her feel successful.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would assess their learning style and see what problems they encounter. I would supplement the learning skill with various methods such as video clips, podcasts, highlighted text and verbal assessment. I would try everything to see what would work for this student.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would give the student short reading passages and ask them to locate certain elements, such as main character, plot, how the paragraphs connect, etc. I would urge the student to practice reading in short spans of time, such as 15-minute increments at least 5 times a week.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

我首先想了解学生人员nal basis. I may ask him or her what they are weak in, and then I will help the student become more confident by overcoming their weaknesses or dislikes in a certain subject.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would try to relate the subject matter to something simple that the student can better understand so that I may build their self-confidence.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Socratic questioning and a short quiz.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I build a student's confidence in a subject by showing them their small successes. I believe that small successes add up to big successes in general.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I verbally question the student's needs.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I assess the student's learning needs and determine if they are a visual, kinesthetic, auditory, or tactile learner and adjust my tutoring skills accordingly.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

PowerPoint presentations, whiteboards, web pages, worksheets, homework assignments, and webcams.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

我将自我介绍,让学生感觉comfortable learning from me. I would also get to know the student and learn some things about them, particularly their learning goals.
