Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

Try your best and don't give up when situations get tough! Walt Disney once said, "We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths." In life you must try different paths in order to succeed.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would get to know the student firsthand by seeing what they have done to try to solve the problem. If they don't know how to solve it we will work together to figure out the solution.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By allowing them to gain insight on how to be a better worker by learning to trust their abilities. Even when they think they can't do it I would encourage them to try first. No one ever succeeds in life without making a lot of mistakes first.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By giving them encouraging words and quotes to push them further than they thought could happen. Many people call themselves failures because they can't get it on the first try. You have to fall down a few times before you can make it on your own.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try to see what works best for them. I would probably show them my way on how to solve it first, and then I would show them videos on the internet and how other people would solve the same problem.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Getting to know who the student is the main objective. I want to find out what their strengths and weakness are in the subject they are studying first.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I love to use games, blocks, or a story when doing mathematics problems to get the student more engaged in the subject.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

There are many techniques I could use, but it all depends on the student. Some students like slower-paced lessons and some like faster-paced ones.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would encourage them and tell them that they aren't the only ones who are struggling in life with school subjects. There are many professional people who struggled with different subjects in school, but they worked hard and studied a lot to make it in life.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I would have to know a little bit about the student's work ethics and how hard they try before giving up on a problem.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I would have to engage the students into the work and show them that it's okay to struggle a little bit, but also don't feel like they're a failure because they don't understand it right away. Sometimes is takes months or weeks before someone fully understands a concept. Everyone is unique in their own different ways. Some people are visual learners whereas others are listeners.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

It all depends on what works best for the students. Many students need to physically see you work the problem out and others may need to learn how to use a calculator to help them solve a problem.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

我没有很好的阅读当我来到this country, and I sometimes still struggle with it. You have to believe in yourself and that you can do it. I taught myself and read lots of books to build my reading scores in FCAT throughout my years in school.
