What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Introduce myself to the student and ask the student a little about what he/she is working on.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Teach the student and give the student numerous similar problems to work on alone. Practice makes perfect.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Chipping in some motivational words during tutoring and helping the student believe he or she can do it with constant practice.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I'll try to understand why the student is having such difficulty, learn from the student what he or she knows best, and try to raise an analogy from what the student understands best to communicate the concept.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Give them simple sentences to read. I recommend short story books in their area of interest to attract them to reading.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Conceptual explanations and problem solving questions.
