I started tutoring math in high school, and tutored math (Pre-Algebra to Calculus 1) and Spanish (1 to 4) at my college's success center for 4 years. After graduating with my Bachelor's degree in Math I became a high school math teacher in Hawaii for 8 years and earned a Master's degree in Education. I taught Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Precalculus, Trigonometry, Statistics and Probability, as well as AP Calculus AB and AP Statistics. Currently I am a high school Math teacher in Boerne, Texas. While I specialize in tutoring math, I also enjoy tutoring Spanish. In my free time I enjoy traveling to different countries and seeing new places.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe all students can succeed with the appropriate support and guidance. Education is a lifelong process and requires patience and stamina. Education. Education is relevant and occurs outside the classroom through our experiences.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session, we will briefly introduce ourselves, and then begin our lesson. I always try to contact my students before our first meeting either via phone or email so that I know what they would like to work on, any materials they use, and if they would like me to prepare anything in advance. This pre-contact helps us use the tutoring time more effectively.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I try to help students become independent learners by guiding them through the process of problem solving, and not just providing answers. I help students see that, many times, asking the right questions can lead you to the right solution. In addition, I share various online resources that can help students when they are stuck.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I work with my students to create specific goals (short term and sometimes long term) about their learning. Then, I help them track their progress to reaching their goals by setting small and frequent "milestones." Seeing their progress and visualizing their path to meeting their goals helps students develop intrinsic motivation.
