My name is Amy. I graduated from Florida Atlantic University with a bachelors in English and worked on my masters at Trinity International University. I have taught twelfth, eleventh, seventh, sixth and fifth grade. While in grad school I worked with the Seminole Tribe of Florida, preparing students for their high school diploma.

Recently we received a new member in my family, my handsome baby boy. I am married to and we reside in North Carolina. We both enjoy spending time with our son, dog and cat. We also enjoy country concerts, reading, traveling and watching movies. I look forward in meeting you and helping you with your academic goals.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is find the adventure in learning. I would love to travel with you to the world of knowledge. "Oh the places you'll go." - Dr. Seuss

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

My first session would typically be a pre-assessment, so I would know the student's strengths and opportunities for growth. I would also brainstorm with the students to make certain goals to achieve academic development.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I will help a student become an independent learner by asking questions that guide them to multiple solutions. Encouraging a student can also help develop confidence for student learning.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Accountability is a great way to motivate a student. Creating goals and documenting weekly assessments will improve the student's academic skills.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student was having a difficult time learning a skill, I would try to identify his or her learning style. I would then utilize various teaching tools that suit the student's learning style.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would read a small passage to the student. The student will be required to respond to various questions using the text for support. The 5 W and 1 H (who, what, when, where, why and how) are also helpful questions when reading independently.
