Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

That every student has a specific learning style, and it is my job to identify that style and adapt accordingly.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Obviously, I would get to know the student, but the most important thing to do is to set goals, and steps to help the student reach that goal. Like many of my bosses have said, "A goal without a plan is just a dream." I want my student's goals to be more than just a dream.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Step up tasks that they can do on their own; make sure there is a structured system in place that they can follow without anyone hounding them about it.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Try to look at it from a different angle; just because you do not understand the first time, doesn't mean you cannot understand it if we take a different approach.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

The best way to help students get engaged with boring subjects is to get them active and moving, and also make a game out of the tutoring; what child doesn't love games?

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

To accommodate my teaching style to their needs, not the other way around. Every situation is different; therefore people learn differently, and I need to be make sure are on the same page from the get go.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Practice problems in multiple formats, test questions, verbal problems, and maybe have them come up with questions of their own so they can comprehend the subject further.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By always having positive reinforcement for even the smallest of successes.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By giving them a pretest to see where they are at currently and where they need help.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By seeing how they learn best, and then determining what would be best for them based on their learning style.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Their textbook, household items, and any technology.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I make sure they fully comprehend each word before attempting to put together the sentence as a whole.
