I am a graduate of Missouri State University. I received my Bachelor of Science with a double major in Spanish and Anthropology, with a focus on biological anthropology.

While in university, I completed two semesters abroad, one in Spain and one in China. While abroad, I tutored students in English, both one on one and in a group setting.

Since graduation, I have traveled to almost 20 countries. I worked as an English language assistant in Spain for two years. I helped high school students improve their conversational and written English skills. I also helped them prepare for the Cambridge exam, the equivalent of the ACT or SAT for ESL students from other countries. I've also helped private students in elementary school, middle school and high school in the USA, Spain and China.

While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about History, English, Spanish, and Writing.

In my experience helping students, I like to take a multimedia approach. I believe rote memorization is only one method to help students learn. I often employ videos, games, apps and real-life examples in my tutoring sessions.

I believe education is important for every person, both as a means for future employment and to improve everyone's quality of life. I try to impart my passion for knowledge to all of my students.

In my spare time, I enjoy writing about my travels, reading alternative history and science fiction novels, and watching every St. Louis Blues game live.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is every student has a different way of learning. This is why I use a multimedia approach, using music, videos, apps, games and real-word events to expand my student's understanding of a subject.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session, I will get to know my student. This includes asking if they know their best methods for learning, what subjects they are passionate about outside of school, and what specific difficulties they have with a subject. I'll do a quick study session where we review what they do understand about a topic through discussion, matching and/or a game.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

First, we'll go over what about a subject the student finds difficult. Is it memorization, long answers, remembering facts or procedures? Then we'll determine how they best learn and remember. Do they remember songs, information associated with a favorite topic, using their hands, or using graphs? After, we'll use discussion to craft a plan to move them to independent learning.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

With the student's interests in mind, we'd devise a system of rewards. This would not only be for large victories, such as large exams, but also small victories, like completing homework independently.
