I am a junior in Petroleum Engineering at the University of Houston. My experience as an engineering student makes me a great teacher in mathematics. I enjoy helping others learn and have a lot of experience teaching. I have tutored before and have worked with children through volunteering at my local school for the ESL program. I know how to simplify difficult concepts in order to guide the student to achieve great understanding and success.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

我了解所有的概念彻底rather than just learning how to solve a problem and moving on. Once the student learns how to apply the concepts he/she learned, they will be able to complete any problem, regardless of how difficult it is.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By teaching my students important self-study tactics and skills, I will help them become a successful independent learner. When studying, it is all about the quality of learning, not the quantity of time being spent.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help my students stay motivated by giving them positive feedback and by encouraging them when they are struggling. I would also remind them of their previous learning challenges that they overcame, which would further motivate them to face their current learning challenge.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

In order to make the concept less difficult, I would start by giving the student simpler questions that still pertain to the main problem, and then I would work through it step-by-step until we reach the solution. I would then give them other similar problems to solve in order to ensure that the student properly understood the concept.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I would start by letting them know that I am there to help them, and that they should feel comfortable explaining their thought process to me at any point without fear of being judged as unintelligent. I have learned that once the student feels comfortable, it becomes easier to identify any weakness a student has and makes it easier and more effective when helping them learn concepts.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

To ensure that the student understands the material, I always ask similar questions that relate to the concept they are struggling with. I know he/she completely understands the topic when the student is able to solve the problem without hesitation.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

我已经注意到,学生倾向于获得更多的信息ntive/excited when they feel like they are understanding what they are doing, rather than struggling. When a student is struggling with a concept, he/she often feels down and gets frustrated. So, in order to get them engaged and excited, I start off with easy questions and slowly work up to more difficult ones so that they are more motivated. This allows them to feel that excitement because they feel like they are learning effectively, rather than getting confused and lost.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

A student becomes confident while learning when they know how to solve the problem without hesitation. This is why I always keep giving the student similar questions until they are able to effectively solve them without any help. This allows the student to feel like they can take on any question with complete ease.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

During the first session with a student, I would try to get to know the student in order to form that connection and help them feel more comfortable. I would also let them know that I am here to guide them towards success and that they should tell me whenever they are confused or not understanding something. I would then proceed to teach them and help them overcome concepts they are struggling with. It is important to form a connection with the student so that they are able to vocalize any help they need instead of being shy/embarrassed. This will help ensure that the student succeeds a lot more quickly and effectively.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I make sure that the student learns the rules and tricks that are applied when doing reading comprehension problems. After that, I give my students plenty of practice problems throughout our sessions to ensure that they grasp the concepts. When it comes to English subjects, practice is essential in order for a student to excel.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I give the student different questions that vary in difficulty. Based on how the student answers these problems, I can get a pretty accurate idea on where they stand with the concept.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Tutoring is all about the student. As the tutor, part of my responsibility is to teach in a way that makes difficult concepts easy for the student. I apply different teaching methods during which I observe the student for their "AHA!" moments and for when they appear confused. Based off of these reactions, I can continually adapt to what best suits the student for more effective learning.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

During a tutoring session, I use my notes from specific classes. I also would use free practice problems that are available to me online.
