Hello, I'm Emma! I'm excited at the possibility of becoming your tutor! Let's see if we would make a good match

A little about me I am a Doctor of Physical Therapy student at MGH Institute of Health Professions. I recently moved to South Boston from my home state of California to pursue my graduate degree and my ultimate goal of becoming a physical therapist. I graduated from UC Davis in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Biology and a minor in Psychology. My previous tutoring experience includes working as a tutor in the Psychology department at UC Davis, peer tutoring within the Exercise Biology department, and various peer-to-peer tutoring roles. At UC Davis I also worked as an Undergraduate Admissions Advisor where I gained extensive knowledge in college essay writing, and as a Campus Tour Guide where I honed my skill of public speaking. Prior to relocating to Boston I was building my career in physical therapy by working as a physical therapy aide in several outpatient orthopedic clinics and volunteering at the VA Rehabilitation Hospital. I am passionate about the health sciences and helping students achieve their academic goals. I am an original Harry Potter nerd and a sports fanatic. In my leisure time I enjoy being outdoors, watching sports, cooking, community volunteering and playing with dogs!

How I can help you

I've likely been in your shoes. I've been the student who has been frustrated with difficult assignments and seemingly useless subjects. However, through my partnership with tutors and a passion for knowledge I have acquired a broader context of the sciences and the study skills that have turned learning into an evolving process rather than a memorization task. I would like to share those skills with you and help YOU learn!

I can help you:
- Balance chemical equations
- Understand the function of cells
- Solve for 'x' in math problems
- Learn human anatomy
- Write your essay or speech
- Give a successful public presentation
- And much more!

Please look over the list of subjects that I am available to tutor and contact me to set up your first tutoring session! I will gladly answer any further questions that you have about my qualifications in a direct message. Thank you for considering me to help you achieve academic success, good luck!

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is centered around the idea that if you understand a concept, rather than memorize information, you can problem solve your way through any exam question or project. I believe it is important to work through academic concepts with students in a way that they learn best (ie. discussing verbally, drawing diagrams, etc.) while simultaneously discussing strategies for solving content related questions. Often students struggle not because they lack intelligence, but because they are missing the one-on-one interaction that is so crucial to learning. I look forward to the opportunity to provide you with guidance in the subjects listed in my profile.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student become an independent learner by facilitating productive study habits and helping students establish a solid baseline understanding of the subject material. With a knowledge base and study skills a student should be able to take steps towards independent learning. It is not my intention for students to need tutoring for longer than a semester!

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I help students stay motivated by reminding them of their goals and motivations for seeking out a tutor. Secondly, I feel it is important to foster a friendly tutor partnership; when you enjoy your learning environment, it is easier to stay motivated and encouraged.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

When a student is having difficulty learning a skill or concept the first thing I do is identify the component of the concept that the student is struggling with. From there I can help the student further breakdown the concept or approach it from a new angle.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

A strategy that I find success with is that I ask students to work through their assignment on their own first, and then we can work through the more difficult aspects together. I do not prefer students to look at their assignments for the first time during our session, as I find that to be a less effective use of our time.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I try to engage students by pointing out where in the bigger picture the material that they are learning matters. Often when students can attach meaning to a subject it becomes more engaging.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I strongly believe that if you can't explain it, then you don't know it! Following that mantra, I like to ask students to explain to me in their own words why an answer is correct.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I like to start by working with the student's strengths in a subject, and then working backwards to the areas that are more challenging.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I typically use the materials that the student is assigned for the subject material. I'm generally equipped with paper, a colorful assortment of pens/markers, a calculator, and an electronic device if required.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Communication is key! I place a great emphasis on what the student tells me that their academic needs are. In return I provide constructive feedback on the progress the student is making towards their goals. Together we can work through the student's needs as they arise.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I recognize that not all students learn the same way. Some students like to work on problems first, and then ask when they do not understand. Some students like to work through material together to learn the thought process. I try to adapt as appropriately to each student's individual learning style as possible.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

In my experience, when students are struggling with reading comprehension I find that helping them dissect the readings and understanding the "gist" of the reading is an important first step towards reading comprehension. However, if students are struggling with the task of reading itself I would encourage them to seek an appropriate reading tutor from the platform!
