"It always seems impossible until it's done." Nelson Mandela

我的名字是沙赫巴兹。我毕业于其中高chool, Fall River, MA in 2012 and attending Bristol Community College to study Engineering Transfer. After graduating from BCC, I attended the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. I am studying Mechanical Engineering and will be entering my Senior year upcoming Fall of 2016. After completion of my bachelors in Mechanical Engineering in May 2017, I plan on transferring to Worcester Polytechnic Institute to pursue Masters in Mechanical Engineering.

When I attended Bristol Community College, I started joining student clubs and Tutoring and Academic Support Center (TASC). First, I got involved in the International Club. And shortly after, in the fall of 2012, I became it Vice President and then it's President. Shortly after joining the International Club, I started to participate in the BCC Debate Club. The Debate Club has helped me gain confidence to speak before an audience and support arguments in debate contests both at BCC and other colleges. In addition, I have worked with the Observer newspaper at BCC giving advice to students on how to use the resources that are available at the college. In addition to my service to the clubs, I have become a peer tutor at TASC (Tutoring and Academic Support Center) and also tutored at the Step Up to College program to help students to achieve their goals and earn their GED. Serving as a tutor is something I like because I get to know different people from different cultures and I get to pass on my experience to others and keep the door open to learnings. I have learned a lot from those I tutored over the years. I have also been participating in community service learning and I have received Service Learning and Community Service Certificates of Appreciation from BCC.

In the meantime, I have been conducting presentations back at my high school about education for women in Pakistan and entering college. In the fall of 2014 I was invited as a guest speaker at BCC to comment on the book "I am Malala" and how the authors experiences relate to mine, my family's, and the people of Pakistan. At BCC I did so much in such little time. My experiences at BCC have broadened my horizons and made me a more conscientious individual; I feel more confident in myself and more capable of venturing into more challenging experiences. I am happy to join this group of many student from across the nation at Varsity tutors to help student out there, who need our help learn and change the world by achieving their goals. My commitment to help our student and our community would continue and I would always use platforms like varsity tutor to make sure I do fulfill my duty by teaching as much as I know and share my education with may students out there.

Q & A

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

我使用了大量的例子合适的婚姻对象cular section I am teaching to help students understand the concept well enough. I also use textbooks, which can be the best resource to help yourself understand the concept and gain knowledge about the subject. I also use many different materials such as external online resources, online notes, textbooks and sample examples from different books of the same subject to understand the concepts in a wider manner.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I have always done one on one tutoring. I always make sure my students are able to understand the concepts before going through any examples. I try to start off by doing some sample problems to make sure they have a general idea of what the concept is about. After knowing that my students are able to know the general concepts, I try putting medium and somewhat hard level questions from those particular sections by using external resources or the book.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I try making sure I know, how much my student knows by asking him general questions about the particular topic we might be working on. Then I expand on the topic and make sure to teach them other ways to tackle the same type of problem. I always want my students to understand that there are many different ways to solve problems. And knowing different techniques helps you realize how you can use each technique at each situation or even in real life to easily find a solution.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I always want my student to become an independent learner. I want my student to make education their first priority in life. Because it would only take us two, three or just four years to finish our degrees and get nice jobs. Because after that we can be enjoying the fruit of our hard work for the rest of our life.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will try to know the particular subject/section my student is having difficulties in. I will maybe give my students a take home review and ask them questions in the particular subject they are getting tutored in. This evolution paper will help me see the areas my student is weak or lacks interest in. Then I could use worksheets focusing on those particular areas and teach them different concepts, making sure she/he understands them.
