I am a recent graduate of University of Maryland, Baltimore County. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. I have taken a wealth of science and mathematics courses. I have taken everything from elementary math up to Calculus II. I have taken Biology, Genetics, Ecology, Microbiology, Cellular Biology, and much more. I have also taken my share of writing and literature classes as I am a blogger, short story writer, and spoken word artist.

I have a passion for passing on the knowledge and techniques I have learned. I genuinely enjoy helping others succeed. I cater my techniques and teaching style to the student I am working with. I also believe that students do better when they can relate subjects back to something that they are interested in. My unique ability to draw unusual connections allows me to incorporate the student’s interests into my teaching style.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

To help a student stay motivated, I will encourage their strengths and accomplishments while showing them that their weaknesses can become their strengths through good study habits.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would employ several ways of presenting the information, ask clarifying questions to understand the specific area of difficulty, and work from there.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Through practice, I would get the student into the habit of drawing connections to their own lives so that the readings would be grounded in something that is real to them.

I adapt my teaching style to the student's strongest learning style.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I will use the problem sets from the tutoring website, as well as any outside materials I find necessary.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

To ensure that the student understands the material, I have them solve a few problems on their own, and more importantly, I will have them teach the major concepts back to me. If a student can teach it, then they have certainly mastered it!

To build the student's confidence, I will have them solve and talk through some problems on their own. This will show them that they can succeed in the subject even when I am not around.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

To evaluate a student's need, I will ask them where they feel they need the most help. I will follow up a diagnostic test to determine the areas where the student is struggling the most.
