How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I start by encouraging students to explain to me what they best understand and find most easily accessible to them. Then, we proceed to break down the meaning of words, sentences, and paragraphs as needed. I start small and work toward a broader comprehension and deeper understanding of the text we are studying.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Getting to know students as individuals is crucial in order to build a solid rapport with them. It is also hugely beneficial to find out what their various academic strengths are, this way I can make sure to bolster them in these areas whenever possible (especially when attempting a new task with which they have struggled in the past).
