Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

The goal of any teacher should be to leave a student confident with their knowledge.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I will teach students study-strategies that I have found effective for other students.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would remind a student of all they have already accomplished.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would work with the student to build their skill in this subject through thorough practice. Additionally, students often have difficulty in subjects which require skills the student has not fully developed. Often, the best way to proceed is to strengthen those formative skills.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Approaching a question from a different perspective is often helpful. I would rephrase the question into a more familiar format, and teach the student to do the same.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I find that working through problems with the student first, then having the student demonstrate how to solve those problems, is the most effective learning strategy.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I find that understanding the implications and applications of the material one is learning to be a strong motivator to keep learning.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

First I would make sure that the student is capable of solving the problems in the format they are most familiar with. Then I would propose hypothetical questions that are slightly changed from the problems the student is familiar with. If the student has a deep understanding of the material they are learning, they should be able to solve these hypothetical questions.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

The best way to build confidence in a subject is repeated practice.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Before I begin actively teaching the student, I might ask the students questions related to the material they are learning. This way, I can assess the student’s knowledge of the material.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I would use different tutoring strategies on students depending upon their need.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Paper, Pen, Calculator, Digital Aids.
