My name is Edward. I look forward to helping out anyone that is facing academic or linguistic challenges. I have a Master In Education from Texas A and M College Station and currently teach 5th grade in New Orleans, LA. I have taught Kindergarten, 1st, 4th and 5th grade in a general education classroom and in a dual-language setting. I am fluent in Spanish and have experience teaching ELL students. I have tutored for Math courses as high as Pre-Calculus. I love teaching Math, Essay writing, and Reading. Those are the core subjects, I know, but I truly have a passion for teaching and seeing individual growth in those I help tutor. I understand that everyone learns differently and look forward to helping you achieve your goals by differentiating my instruction so that you can feel comfortable and positive about the learning experience.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Everyone can learn!

It is important to know my students. I will take the time to introduce myself and get to know the person I am teaching so that I can better modify my teaching methods to meet his or her needs.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

A student needs to find joy in what they are learning. It is my job to help them find happiness in the learning experience.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Positive feedback is key to persistence and motivation.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

There is always another way to teach one skill or concept.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I make the reading material relevant to a student's life so that they can better retain the information.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I scaffold all material so that it is presented in a timely and efficient manner.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Once again, positive feedback is so important to a student's confidence and level of motivation.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Scaffolding, positive reinforcement, repetition, and relating material to relatable subject matter.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Positive feedback and praise is monumental.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I assess their performance based on a teaching style and make modifications where necessary.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By understanding the student, I am able to gauge how to deliver information, and how to reinforce a concept so that it is relevant and important.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use various math manipulatives, pencils, paper, an assortment of texts, and a smile.
