Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

Perfect practice makes perfect. Repetition is key; however, it is important to ensure that the student is learning the concept correctly.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would gather information about his or her learning needs and determine in which areas the student could use clarification and which areas in which he or she is already proficient. Then I would answer any pressing questions that he or she may have.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would help a student become an independent learner by asking questions and guiding the student towards the right answer rather than spoon feeding the information.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would encourage the student to keep studying hard to reach his or her goals. Furthermore, I would remind the student that although the class may seem daunting if he or she works at it every day it won't seem so bad in retrospect.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

First I would try to determine how much the student does understand in regards to that concept. Then I would address the parts with which the student is struggling. If possible I would relate the topic to something that the student has already mastered or to something that he or she experiences in everyday life.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would help the student break down the sentence (or words) into parts and then work on analyzing the parts of the sentence (including the punctuation) to form the whole so as to help the student develop a thought process that will allow him or her to analyze passages that are challenging.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I have found that asking the student to explain his or her understanding of the important concepts is useful in determining what the student understands and does not understand. Then I am better able to address the concepts on which the student needs to focus.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would relate that topic to everyday life. For example If I was tutoring a 16 year old in physics I might relate the material to the workings of a car.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would quiz the student on the material and have him or her demonstrate mastery of the topic before moving on.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would bring back information that he or she has already mastered. Not only does this reinforce the learning and help the student retain the information, it also helps build confidence since the student will be able to see his or her progress.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By asking the student questions related to the material to test his or her understanding and by asking the student what it is that they are having difficulty with.

你如何适应辅导学生的不eds?

By focusing on topics that the student struggles with and by using methods and explanations that cater to the way that the student learns best.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I typically use the textbook if available, pen, paper, calculator, and a whiteboard or chalkboard if available.
