Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe teaching should cater to the holistic needs of a child. I believe that success in math begins with your mindset. Shift your mindset towards success and notice the change!!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

在first session, I will work on homework assignments on quiz prep. As we are working, I will observe what skills need to be strengthened and from there I will work with you to work on them. That may happen during the first session.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

As we work on math problems, I always give sufficient time to allow you to think through it on your own. I even allow you to make mistakes. That's one of the best ways to learn math!

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I have strategies that can help students stay motivated in addition to building positive relationships with my students.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

We would continue to work on that concept using manipulatives or any other tools to help the student. I like learning math through songs. It helps to remember concepts. Once the student has grasped the concept, I will reinforce those skills/concepts in future sessions.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

There are several reading strategies that we can use to help students with reading comprehension, especially with math. One way is to underline information that is relevant to the problem and cross off information that is not. Once a student has a read a problem, it is important they regurgitate it in their own words to demonstrate that they understand what was read. Once solved, I work with students on interpreting solutions so that they can connect the word problem to their solution.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I generally have good relationships with my students. I have a gentle nature and am very patient. That helps my students feel comfortable. The first session for me is generally smooth.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Learning through music, foldables, manipulatives, and any other resources.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would either assess students at the end of the session or request that the student explain in their own words the material we went over (in many ways, have the student teach it to me).

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I help students with their mindsets. I am always encouraging students never to give up and when they feel frustrated to simply step away from the problem and breath. Everyone is capable. There are just some gaps, and it’s my job to help you identify the loopholes.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

During our first session, I observe the student's skills and personality and am able to identify the best way to approach the student in future sessions.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

In many ways I follow the lead of the student. If a student does not feel comfortable moving forward from a challenging concept, I am more than willing to stay on the concept to help the child understand. If they feel they are ready to move forward, then we go over more challenging problems.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Foldables, Music, Dry Erase Boards, Activities for Games such as Tic Tac Toe, Trashketball, etc.
