After I received my Master's degree in Financial Engineering I worked in the financial field for more than five years. It was very interesting and exciting. I was single and I enjoyed working those long and stressful hours.

I moved on with my life and decided to have a family, which has been one of the best journeys in my life. I have been thinking about changing my path and beginning to teach.

One day I woke up and went to the college that I admired. After multiple meetings and interviews I got hired.

Teaching my first class was nerve racking but yet rewarding.

我爱我所做的。我觉得我发挥作用in my students' lives and they influence mine, too. They keep me motivated. Teaching is a noble field and I am proud to be part of it.

Q & A

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know the student personally and academically. Ask him/her for their goals and their needs. What are his/her expectations? Set up a plan for next sessions.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Books, practice sheets, apps, medias supports, and hands on material.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By giving him/her the time to solve and understand the problem. If I see that he/she can't even start, I start asking leading questions.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By giving them easy questions in the beginning to build the confidence, and then rise the pace. Reward verbally or through a pre-established system. Having games and interesting activities prepared.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Divide the problem into steps, with easier questions to help reach the next step, and at the end solving the problem.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

They have to first read in a loud voice. Help them scan the text for key words. Encourage them to read more when they have time to practice.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Collaborative learning and flipped learning.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

By building self-confidence and preparing fun activities. Rewarding is also important.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Observe the way she/he solves the problem. Use a quiz game.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By having him/her answering questions at their level, and starting building on that to reach the level we need to reach. Reward the student every time.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By asking them about their needs and having a little questionnaire ready based on the subject.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

If he /she is a fast learner, I challenge them with questions on their level. Depending on the subject, I would focus on the area of need. Is it analysis, understanding the problem, not knowing where to start...?
