Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

I have a step-by-step teaching philosophy. When I'm teaching, I solve the problem utilizing a step-by-step method with a focus on ensuring that the student understands each step. Once each step is understood, the student has the confidence to apply the step-by-step method to other problems.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

During our first session I provide information related to my background and why I am qualified to tutor you in the subject. I want you to feel confident that I am able to help. I also use that time to get to know you personally and academically. We'd use the first session to discuss my method of teaching and understand what method you are comfortable with. I would also use the first session to understand what difficulties you are having with the related subject.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Helping a student to become an independent learner goes back to my step-by-step methodology. Once the student realizes that the method to solving all problems goes back to going through logical steps then they will be able to independently and quickly grasp new concepts.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Maintaining motivation is constant and evolves over time. Praising correct answers, congratulating the grasping on concepts, eagerly working through mistakes and supporting students to keep striving to do better is how I motivate my students.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

The old cliche is true here "Practice makes perfect!" In my early days of math I would be frustrated when I did not understand a new or difficult concept but doing several problems over and over helps. Everyone has the capability, but, with some concepts it takes a bit more time.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Understanding word problems can be difficult sometimes. Creating a visual representation and breaking the problem down can be helpful.

你发现什么策略最successful when you start to work with a student?

Strategies that I’ve found to be helpful are teaching/solving problems in a step-by-step method, and then going to another problem and letting the student solve the problem independently utilizing the method that they just learned.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Increasing confidence gets students excited about and engaged with a subject. The key is celebrating the little victories.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

To make sure a student understands the material I would have them independently work problems real time with me. I would also have them teach me the subject/problem. I find that if you can teach it then you understand it.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Building a student’s confidence in a subject is important. The way I build a student's confidence is through celebrating the little victories and showing them how far they have come (i.e. progress) in their understanding of a subject.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate a student’s needs by talking to them and understanding the mistakes they are making on the problems that they work with me and in class.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt to a student’s needs by understanding what their needs are and making changes to my methods to make sure they increase their confidence in the subject.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I typically use practice problems. My methodology is "Practice makes perfect."
